# Self-host monitoring and status pages

A monitor should live somewhere other than the thing it watches. An
exe.dev VM is a cheap, always-on vantage point with HTTPS, and it can
[email you](/docs/send-email) when something breaks.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I publish a status page?

Yes. exe.dev makes one port of a VM public with `ssh exe.dev share set-public <vm>` and keeps ports 3000-9999 behind exe.dev login, so a recipe can publish only the status page while the dashboard stays private.
